To begin with, those are not “holes” in golf balls. They are small indentations, called dimples. Like any sport, golf has certain rules and regulations. These also apply to the balls used. A golf ball is about half the size of a baseball or tennis ball. But it just can’t be any size. In the United Kingdom a golf ball should weigh 45.9 grams, and its diameter should be 4.11 centimeters. In the United States a ball may be slightly larger. Early in the history of golf, the balls were made of heavy leather, stuffed with feathers. Today the ball is made by winding strip rubber tightly around a core and covering it with a hard, rubber like composition material.
